Rain

Rain, a Blind Lurcher Boy

Courtesy Posting for Minnesota Greyhound Rescue

Rain was totally blind when he was rescued in Ohio from an elderly couple who kept him tied outside 24/7 surrounded by rebar poking up all over the ground. He had little clean water and was fed sporadically. Rain was in very poor shape and was loaded with parasites. His gentle and kind spirit shone through and he rebounded rapidly. An eye specialist said he was blind because of an untreated eye infection. Minnesota Greyhound Rescue and Adoption took Rain as a foster. MNGR had this to say about Rain: When we volunteered to foster a blind dog from a neglect situation, I thought he would be timid and shy. Nope! When he first came here, he charged around the house, checking everything out. Over time, we realized that’s what he does in a new place — he roams around, figures out where things are, and counts (yes, he counts!) any stairs until he’s comfortable. Then he goes into normal greyhound mode and turns into a couch potato.

Rain is blind, but he is very adaptable! He knows the commands “step” and “wrong way.” Whenever he visits a new house, he finds the stairs and goes up and down several times, counting the number of steps. He moves slowly inside to avoid bumping into things. It’s amazing to watch him orient himself by finding a wall or piece of furniture. When we kennel him and our two hounds, he walks along the kennels, counting doors until he reaches the third — his kennel!

He loves carbs. He can be a counter-thief, but he always steals carbs — muffins, hamburger buns, chips (Doritos are his favorite!). He has gotten better about not stealing over time, as he’s realized that he will be fed twice a day, every day, but I still have to watch my groceries when I’m bringing them inside.

Also, Rain does a special move that we call his “Rain-dance.” When you scratch his hind end, he stomps his feet and wiggles his butt.

He is also quite the groaner when he sleeps. All will be quiet and then I hear a big “urrrhhhh” and that’s Rain, letting out a big groan to let the world know what a tough life it is, being a dog!

Rain had quite a journey from Ohio to Minnesota. Rain found his special family and forever couch in August of 2014 and is finally home. We wish this very special boy many years of happiness and comfort. He so deserves a wonderful life of love and comfort.

WD: So tell us about this handsome lad.
